Besides the central sterile processing technician program, another career option that one can consider is becoming an endoscopy technician. An endoscopy technician is focused on preparing medical instruments and equipment for endoscopy procedures. 

Endoscopy procedures refer to a noninvasive method used to inspect the digestive system. Endoscopy helps gastroenterologists effectively detect and treat gastrointestinal disorders as it examines the esophagus, stomach, intestine, and rectum.

In terms of the work environment, endoscopy technicians may be expected to work late or weekend shifts as there can be last-minute schedules for endoscopy procedures. Endoscopy technicians are expected to maintain sterile medical environments and use protective clothing and equipment when performing their duties in preparing and keeping tools and equipment before endoscopy treatments. 

Endoscopy technicians work in hospitals or clinics with endoscopy or gastrointestinal units. Aside from this, endoscopy technicians can also be found working at the offices of gastroenterologists, where endoscopic procedures are conducted.

Disinfection and sterilization are crucial portions of the job of an endoscopy technician. Cleaning and maintaining medical equipment and tools are crucial, so infectious pathogens are not transmitted. Endoscopy technicians must clean and disinfect endoscopic tools as per manufacturer requirements.

The primary job description of an endoscopy technician in a medical environment is not for the faint of heart. During endoscopic procedures with a gastroenterologist, an endoscopy technician ensures that the tools and equipment needed for the procedure are prepared, complete, and sterilized. 

The job of an endoscopy technician is crucial, as inaccurate work can put a life at risk. Endoscopy helps gastroenterologists inspect a patient’s digestive system and see if there are abnormalities, such as tumors and inflammation.

Endoscopy technicians also need to be physically and psychologically resilient because of the profession’s demands in the medical field. Considering the work environment in medical facilities, the capacity to think clearly and rationally can be an advantage. Aside from this, medical facilities prefer endoscopy technicians with experience in an operating room and an in-depth understanding of equipment and supplies used for endoscopy.
